Weirton VFD, Co. #1 was established in 1932 in the unincorporated town of Weirton, WV. In the early 1900's, we purchased a Ford Model T and had American LaFrance outfit the "T" for use as a fire apparatus. We purchased a truck for the sole purpose of rescue in 1957, one of the first departments to do so. In 1974, we received the Ohio Valley's first set of the Jaw's of Life. When the newer high pressure, 4500 psi SCBA bottles were introduced in 1980's, we were again the first in the region to utilize this new technology. We started the first river rescue team between Wheeling and Pittsburgh in 1984, and continually host classes from WVU Fire Extension Service, FEMA, National Emergency Training Center, National Fire Academy, Air Products, Weirton Steel, and Duquesne Light's BVP Nuclear Power Station. More about the history of Weirton Volunteer Fire Dept., Co. #1 is available at this website.

Currently, there are 40 active members on our roster.
